- This program is very much in progress. If you like it and
- are using it I recommend that you fetch a new version every
- few weeks from pub/music at Princeton.edu. Note that it
- is not *really* a real-time mixer in that you can't change
- the attributes of a sound while it is playing (yet). This
- will come sooner or later. Please let me know if you have
- any suggestions, comments or even if you just want to
- kibbitz. I like this program a lot and have been using
- it very heavily in my own work.
-
- The program included in the app.wrapper called
- enableFixedPolicy trips a flag in the kernel
- which allows the mixing in this application to
- run at a higher priority. This program should
- be chowned to root and have its setuid bit set
- chown root enableFixedPolicy
- chmod 4755 enableFixedPolicy
- you have to do this as root, of course.
-
- if you don't have this program there is nothing
- fatal, it simply makes the sound driver work a bit
- better on long mixes, and keeps its priority from
- being degraded. BUT it can make it difficult for
- other processes to get attention, so it is not too
- polite to run it on a shared and networked machine.
- (RT is probably not going to work all that well under
- these conditions anyway.) If you don't want to use it
- just rename it or something and there will be a mild
- complaint in your console log when you start up the
- application, but you won't notice anything different.
